Casks have a huge influence on whisky. As new make spirit slowly matures inside them, the casks use these long years to impart their vast array of robust flavours.
When you bottle straight from the cask, without adding water to reduce alcohol content, it follows that what you are going to taste is whisky - and the cask’s influence - in its purest form.
Cask Strength Release No. 1 is matured predominantly in sherry seasoned American oak casks of different ages, hand-selected by Gordon Motion, Highland Park's Master Whisky Maker. It is then directly bottled - not chill-filtered - to ensure the essential DNA and natural colour of the whisky stays intact. There is nothing in this single malt whisky other than the whisky itself. Nothing but the intensely balanced, award-winning spirit of Highland Park.
It is at once sweet and smoky on the nose, with aromas of violets and ripe vanilla pods amidst waves of aromatic peat smoke. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, with soft toffee, heather honey, freshly grated nutmeg, and sun-ripened citrus fruits that give way to an exotically spiced crème brûlée finish.
