The Blair Athol 20 Years Limited Release is a twenty-year-old single malt from the Highlands, distilled at the historic Blair Athol Distillery. The distillery is known for a full, malty house style that gains additional depth and spice through extended maturation.
This whisky spent its first five years in refill casks before continuing its maturation for a further fourteen years in a mix of heavily toasted American oak casks and wine-seasoned American oak & European oak casks. The use of these different cask types introduces a layered oak influence, bringing together fruit, gentle sweetness and warming spice while allowing the distillate’s character to remain clearly present.
On the nose, the whisky opens with fresh fruit notes of grape and tropical fruit, suggesting mango and papaya, alongside a light hint of honeydew melon. As it develops, softer aromas of milk chocolate and delicate sweetness begin to appear.
On the palate the texture is creamy and full. The first impression is lightly sweet and fruity before gradually moving towards warmer spice-driven notes. Ginger-like spices and a gentle peppery edge add structure and depth, while the overall balance remains controlled and harmonious.
The finish is long and warming, with lingering spice and a soft peppery note that slowly fades.
After two decades of maturation, this release shows how the robust, malty core of Blair Athol can evolve into a whisky of depth, structure and broad aromatic range.
