A delight and everything you expect from Sancerre!
Over the centuries, Ladoucette has grown into the most prestigious winery in the Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre appellations. Consequently, the Sauvignon Blancs produced by this house belong to the absolute world elite, with the winery continuously striving for perfection. While Ladoucette originally produced only white wine, recent efforts in the production of red wines are also bearing fruit, with several pristine expressions of Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc.
Since the end of the 18th century, the largest and most famous vineyards of Pouilly-Fumé have been in the hands of the Lafond and Ladoucette families. The story goes that Pouilly-Fumé was Napoleon's favorite white wine, and Chambertin his favorite red. As with so many families with famous vineyards, winemaking was not their primary occupation. It was merely a hobby. The Lafond and Ladoucette families were bankers, and some members were presidents of the Banque de France, the largest bank in France at the time. For two centuries, Pouilly-Fumé de Ladoucette was produced by the family solely for reasons of prestige.
In 1972, Baron Patrick de Ladoucette took over the vineyard. He was the first member of the family to dedicate himself entirely to wine production. He successfully invested in the prestige and diversity of his vineyards. He created a private reserve Pouilly-Fumé named Baron de L. This was the very first private reserve for a white wine, in a heavy bottle that was a replica of an 18th-century bottle. The wine is widely acclaimed and is considered one of the best Sauvignon Blancs in the world.
The Baron expanded his operations to Sancerre and purchased a vineyard in Vouvray in 1980, home to some of the best Chenin Blancs in the world. There is one guiding principle behind these investments and acquisitions: Ladoucette aims to produce the best (white) wines in the world by cultivating specific grape varieties with great care under the best conditions for that particular variety.
