What stands out most in this Trinidad is the extra layer added by the port cask to an already mature base rum. It was distilled in 2011 at Trinidad Distillers Limited and released as part of the Planteray Single Casks 2024 series. This is a single cask bottling, cask number 19, released specifically for the Dutch market.
The maturation details are quite specific: the rum first spent 11 years in bourbon casks, followed by a second maturation of 1 year and 3 months in Ferrand casks, and then a 9 month finish in a Kopke port cask. That sequence helps explain the profile, which goes beyond classic Trinidad structure by adding a darker, riper fruit character alongside oak and spice.
Across nose and palate, red and dark fruits run through the rum, including blackberry, raspberry, cherry and plum, supported by tropical fruit and floral notes. Warmer tones of walnut, cinnamon, clove, caramel and vanilla follow, while the palate adds apricot, banana, black pepper, hazelnut, chocolate and tobacco. The finish stays long, with notes of passion fruit, strawberry, mango, almond, leather, citrus peel, smoke and coconut. I have folded the tasting notes into the body text rather than listing them separately.
