Three Angels shows a darker and more intense side of Abuelo. Its base is made from single-estate reserves that first mature in ex-bourbon casks and then undergo an extra stage in heavily toasted virgin American oak. The rum is also finished on the upper racks of the warehouse, where higher heat leads to greater evaporation. Those extra angel’s shares give the bottling its name, but more importantly they help shape its more concentrated style.
In the glass, it sits immediately in a richer and warmer register. Roasted hazelnuts, sweet spice and exotic fruit open the profile, followed by dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, caramel and dark fruit. The oak influence is clearly present, but not in a dry or severe way; instead it adds body, a velvety texture and a lightly smoky undertone. The result has more weight and more length than a softer, classically aged style.
This is a rum that rewards a slower pace. It opens dark and full, but remains balanced through the combination of ripe fruit, sweeter oak tones and spice. That makes Three Angels especially well suited to drinkers who enjoy aged Panama rum with more depth, more intensity and a more pronounced cask influence.
