THE STORY BEHIND BRIDE'S TEARS
According to tradition, 17th-century Dutch sailors drank one last glass with their loved ones just before departing for distant destinations such as the East Indies. The farewell could last for months or even years and was often final. The tears shed at the parting were symbolically called "bride's tears." To soften these emotional moments, a clear liqueur with fine gold flakes was served. The floating gold particles were said to represent the sparkling tears of the bride, while simultaneously symbolizing prosperity, happiness, and a safe return. Although the story is partly legendary, it aligns beautifully with the maritime history of Amsterdam and the trading period of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), in which parting from loved ones was a regular part of life.
