The Kanosuke Distillery is a modern Japanese whisky producer based in Kagoshima, on the island of Kyushu. The distillery is known as one of the most innovative new players in the Japanese whisky world and distinguishes itself through its progressive approach.
Kanosuke was founded in 2017 by Yoshitsugu Komasa. This was an expansion of the Komasa Jyozo family business, which has been known for producing shochu since 1883. The distillery bears the name of Kanosuke Komasa, Yoshitsugu's grandfather, who played a pioneering role in aging shochu in wooden barrels.
The distillery is beautifully situated on the coast of Fukiagehama Beach, overlooking the East China Sea. The slogan “Mellow Land, Mellow Whisky” refers to the mild climate and the influence of the sea air on the maturation and style of the whisky.
What makes Kanosuke special is its innovative production. The distillery possesses three pot stills, each with its own shape. This ensures greater variety in the distillates. Kanosuke uses not only classic whisky casks but also ex-Shochu casks, resulting in a unique depth of flavor. Production is relatively small, with an emphasis on quality and the blending of different styles.
