Coppa Piña Colada is a delicious and very creamy cocktail made with white rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice.
Created by Ramon ‘Monchito’ Marrero in August 1954 at the Caribe Hilton’s Beachcomber Bar in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the name literally translates as strained pineapple (piña, pineapple +colada, strained) in Spanish and has been the official beverage of Puerto Rico since 1978.
Giving credibility to this story is the fact that coconut cream, one of the primary ingredients of the cocktail, was invented in 1954 in the University of Puerto Rico by Ramón López Irizarry.
