In 2015, Mount Gay acquired 131 hectares of the original Mount Gay Estate and Oxford Estate. For the first time since the early 20th century, Mount Gay is producing everything in-house, from cane to bottle. At the Mount Gay Estate, we cultivate our own sugarcane varieties specifically for the specific terroir of the oldest operating rum estate in the world. The Single Estate Series was created using only molasses from sugarcane sourced from our estate in St. Lucy, Barbados. Fermented, distilled, aged, and blended at the Mount Gay Distillery, this rum represents a unique expression of our singular terroir in Barbados.
For the first release of the Single Estate Series, Master Blender Trudiann Branker created a blend of rums from the estate's 2016 and 2017 sugarcane harvests. The small-batch rum was 100% distilled in copper stills and matured in ex-bourbon casks (Quercus Alba). 23_01_Bn_Qa will be released in October 2023 and is the first in a recurring annual series.
